How to develop our mindset and start from scratch? CIDE provided some valuable chances for students to attend the seminar given by Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Shenzhen Research Institute. Professors from Pennsylvania State University, Berks shared with students about the experience of how to develop a creative mindset and perceive the power of innovation. Lecture Two

Collaborative Creative Problem Solving Techniquea for Innovation Teams

a

Starting from his personal experience, Prof. Abdullah Konak introduced the methods and steps to develop creative thinking when team members needed to cooperate with each other.

Step One:

Try to connect some irrelevant things and generate a new idea. For example, try to build a relationship between two words “printer” and “nose”, and then create a new thing. One possibility is that we can invent a printer that uses nose to control and this is a kind of innovation. Another possibility may be we can add some odors in the ink box. If we can smell an apple, then the green ink box is empty. If we can smell an orange, then the orange ink box is empty. This is also a kind of innovation. When you can connect two things that are totally different, maybe you can find out new innovations.

Step Two:Brainstorming

Many people may not know how to do a brainstorming. Here are some techniques. First you need to prepare yourself with a lot of ideas. Then you need to express your ideas without being disturbed by others.

Why brainstorming is so important? That is because we have a thinking deficit called inertia. What is inertia? When we are discussing a problem, if someone raises an idea that is just so-so, we will follow to say the idea is nice and stop to think deeply about the problem.

Step Three:

Think and discuss the negative weaknesses and difficulties about the task among your team members. Weaknesses and difficulties often give us some unique inspirations since chances and challenges will appear.

In the end, professors reminded students to go into action after having the creative mindset!

Innovation is not about perfection, but about the action and mental preparation when facing the failure.
